Poeta estadounidense. Formado como pediatra, Williams escribió poesía y practicó la medicina en su pueblo natal. Es conocido por su arte de revestir lo cotidiano de una apariencia extraordinaria mediante el uso de una imaginería clara y específica. Ejemplo de esto son las impresiones frescas y directas del mundo sensual expresadas en The Red Wheelbarrow [La carretilla roja], incluido en Spring and All (1923). Paterson (1946–58), un poema compuesto de cinco partes, ofrece una compleja visión de la vida moderna en EE.UU. En 1963 obtuvo el Premio Pulitzer en poesía por Pictures from Brueghel [Cuadros de Brueghel] (1962). Sus numerosas obras en prosa comprenden ensayos, una trilogía de novelas, cuentos, dramas y su autobiografía.
